Building Mecha’s Focused Heel Through Patience, Clarity, and Box Training
In this Training Sessions video, we continue building Mecha’s focused heel while introducing more box training to clean up his positions sit, down, and stand.
Mecha has been a really fun dog to train because he’s forced us to slow things down and pay attention to the small details.
Compared to Oso, Mecha’s progression has looked very different. He’s required more patience, smaller steps forward, and a more methodical approach to training. And honestly, that’s a good thing.
Every dog learns differently.
One of the biggest mistakes people make in dog training is trying to force every dog into the same pace, same system, or same expectations. But real progress comes from understanding the dog in front of you and adjusting the training to fit them.
That’s exactly what we’ve been doing with Mecha.
What We’re Working On
During this session, we focus on:
Improving Mecha’s focused heel and engagement
Introducing more structure through box training
Building cleaner, more consistent positions
Increasing his attention span session by session
The box work has been extremely helpful for creating clarity in his movements. By giving him a defined space to work within, Mecha is learning how to better understand his sit, down, and stand positions without unnecessary movement or confusion.
At the same time, we’re continuing to build his focused heel by rewarding engagement, attention, and consistency.
These sessions aren’t about rushing results.
They’re about creating understanding.
Why Slower Progress Isn’t Bad
One thing Mecha continues to remind us of is that progress doesn’t always have to be explosive to be effective.
Not every dog is going to learn at the same speed.
Not every dog is going to have overwhelming drive.
And not every dog needs high pressure or fast progression to improve.
Sometimes the best thing you can do for a dog is slow down, simplify the process, and build confidence through repetition and clarity.
That’s how you create long-term reliability.
With Mecha, the improvements have come from:
Repetition without frustration
Clear communication
Small, achievable progressions
Consistency over intensity
And because of that, his understanding continues to improve every session.
Attention and Clarity Take Time
A major focus in Mecha’s training has been increasing his ability to stay mentally present throughout the session.
Attention is a skill.
Engagement is a skill.
And both are developed over time through structured work and clear communication.
The more successful repetitions a dog has, the more confident and consistent they become.
That’s why patience matters so much in dog training.
Instead of chasing flashy moments, we focus on building strong fundamentals that will carry over into every part of training later on.
Every Dog Brings Something Different
Mecha may not have the same level of intensity or drive as Oso, but that’s what makes him fun to work with.
He brings his own personality, his own challenges, and his own progression style to the table. As trainers, that’s our job — learning how to communicate clearly with the individual dog in front of us.
And honestly, that’s one of the best parts of training dogs.
No two dogs are the same.
No two training journeys look identical.
But when you stay patient, consistent, and clear, progress always comes.
