Bandit Starts Building the Foundation for His Front Position

In Bandit’s latest training session, we started with some familiar luring and heel work before introducing a new piece of his obedience: the front position.

Bandit has been making great progress with his engagement, heel mechanics, and static positions, so now we’re beginning to add another layer to his obedience foundation.

Starting With a Familiar Warm-Up

We opened the session with some basic luring and heeling exercises.

This gives Bandit a chance to get engaged, moving, and mentally connected with the handler before we introduce something new.

Because these exercises are already familiar to him, they also help create a smooth transition into the more technical part of the session.

Introducing the Front Position

After the warm-up, we started working on the foundation of Bandit’s front position.

At this stage, we are not focused on making it perfect.

The main goal is to help Bandit understand where we want his body in relation to the handler.

That means creating a clear picture of the position first, then gradually improving the mechanics, alignment, and consistency as his understanding develops.

Mechanics Before Precision

Just like with Bandit’s heel work and other obedience positions, we want to establish the mechanics before asking for more complexity.

If a dog fully understands where to go and how to move into the position, it becomes much easier to add verbal cues, speed, precision, and reliability later.

By keeping the early repetitions simple, we can reduce confusion and give Bandit a much clearer path to success.

Building on His Existing Obedience

The front position is another piece that will eventually connect with the rest of Bandit’s obedience.

His heel work, engagement, body awareness, and position training all support the new behavior.

That is one of the benefits of building obedience in layers.

Each new skill is not completely separate from everything else. The stronger the overall foundation becomes, the easier it is to introduce new positions and more advanced exercises.

Another Strong Session From Bandit

Bandit did awesome throughout the session, as usual.

He continues to bring a lot of enthusiasm into training, and that willingness to work gives us plenty of room to keep progressing him.

We’ll continue developing his front position while also maintaining the heel work, luring exercises, and other obedience foundations we have already been building.
