Teaching Sit in Motion and Duration Obedience with Board and Train Onyx

When most people think about obedience training, they picture commands like sit, down, and come. While teaching those commands is important, developing reliability within those commands is what creates truly dependable obedience.

In this training session, we're working with Board and Train Onyx on commands in motion, with a primary focus on sit in motion and duration. While Onyx already has plenty of experience holding his down position through exercises like place and his regular down command, we wanted to spend more time developing the same level of confidence and understanding in his sit.

The result is a more balanced dog that can maintain obedience regardless of the command being asked.

Why Sit in Motion Matters

Many dogs learn how to sit when they stop moving, but sit in motion introduces an entirely different challenge.

The dog must be able to process information while moving, quickly perform the requested behavior, and remain committed to the position until released. This requires a combination of understanding, impulse control, and confidence.

Teaching commands in motion also helps prepare dogs for more advanced obedience exercises and real-world situations where quick responses and reliability are important.

The more fluent a dog becomes with movement-based obedience, the more responsive and dependable they become overall.

Building Duration in the Sit Position

Because Onyx spends a significant amount of time holding downs through place work and obedience exercises, we wanted to ensure his sit position received the same attention.

Throughout this session, we focused on having Onyx maintain his sit both with me standing close to him and while creating distance between us.

This teaches an important lesson: the command remains the same regardless of where the handler is located.

Many dogs initially struggle when the handler moves away because they begin associating obedience with proximity. By gradually increasing distance while reinforcing success, dogs learn that their responsibility remains unchanged until they receive a release or a new command.

This creates stronger obedience and greater reliability over time.

Developing Better Impulse Control

Duration work is one of the best ways to improve impulse control.

Dogs naturally want to move, investigate their environment, and anticipate what comes next. By teaching them to maintain positions despite distractions, movement, and changes in handler location, we help them learn patience and self-control.

These skills transfer into virtually every area of training, from everyday obedience to off-leash reliability and behavior modification.

A dog with strong impulse control is often easier to handle, more responsive, and more confident in a variety of environments.

Onyx Continues to Impress

One of the things that stood out during this session was how quickly Onyx adapted to the exercise.

While sit in motion and extended sit duration are still relatively new concepts for him, he showed a strong willingness to learn and a clear understanding of what was being asked. As the session progressed, his confidence continued to grow and his responses became more consistent.

Those small improvements add up quickly when training is structured and repetitive.

Like all obedience training, success comes from continuing to put in quality repetitions and building upon the foundation that has already been established.

Building Reliable Obedience Through Repetition

Advanced obedience is rarely built through complicated exercises. More often, it is developed through consistent repetition, clear communication, and gradually increasing expectations.

By continuing to work on sit in motion, duration, and commands under varying conditions, we're helping Onyx develop the skills necessary for reliable obedience both on and off leash.

We're excited to continue building on his progress and watching his confidence grow with every training session.
