Board and Train Recall Training with Onyx
Reliable recall is one of the most important obedience commands a dog can learn. Whether you're working on everyday obedience, off-leash reliability, or behavior modification, a strong recall creates better communication, greater freedom, and improved safety for both the dog and handler.
In this training session, we're continuing to build Onyx's recall through a variety of exercises designed to improve speed, clarity, and commitment to the command. As part of his Board and Train program, our focus is creating a recall that is reliable, enthusiastic, and consistent regardless of distractions or environment.
Building Recalls from Duration Commands
One of the exercises we worked on in this session was recalling Onyx from his down command while maintaining duration in the position.
Many dogs become excited when they know movement is coming and will begin anticipating the release before being given a command. By reinforcing duration before the recall, we're teaching Onyx to remain committed to his down until he receives clear direction from the handler.
This helps improve impulse control, strengthens obedience, and creates a dog that understands the importance of waiting for information rather than making decisions on their own.
Using Indirect Rewards to Create Better Engagement
We also incorporated our "get it" marker throughout the session.
Get it is an indirect reward marker that allows us to build motivation and engagement while reinforcing desired behaviors. By strategically incorporating indirect rewards into recall training, we can create a dog that is excited to work while maintaining clarity throughout the exercise.
The result is often a faster, more enthusiastic recall without sacrificing obedience or precision.
Developing motivation and understanding together creates a stronger training foundation than relying on either one alone.
Using the E-Collar as a Gas Pedal
One of the concepts we continue to implement with Onyx is using the e-collar as a gas pedal rather than a correction tool.
When introduced correctly, the e-collar can become a communication tool that helps increase speed, confidence, and responsiveness during recalls. Instead of viewing the equipment as punishment, the dog learns that stimulation provides information and guidance.
For Onyx, this approach has helped create faster recalls and greater commitment to returning to the handler when called.
Clear communication always produces better results than confusion or conflict.
Finishing Every Recall with a Sit
Throughout the session, every recall concluded with a sit in front of the handler.
This creates consistency and accountability while teaching Onyx that the recall is not complete simply because he arrived near the handler. The finished position becomes part of the behavior, helping create cleaner obedience and greater reliability over time.
These details may seem small, but they often separate average obedience from advanced obedience.
Onyx Continues to Make Progress
One of the most rewarding parts of any Board and Train program is watching a dog's confidence and understanding continue to grow through consistent training.
Onyx has been making tremendous progress throughout his program. His recalls are becoming faster, his obedience is becoming more reliable, and his overall understanding of the training process continues to improve.
Every session builds upon the last, and we're excited to continue developing his skills as he moves forward in training.
