Peaches Builds Engagement, Body Awareness, and Place Training Foundations
Peaches is only a few days into her board and train program, and she is already showing a lot of enthusiasm for the work.
In this session, we focused on building engagement through luring, reinforcing several useful positions and movement patterns, and introducing more foundation work for her place command.
Because Peaches’ program is pet-first, we are making sure her everyday obedience is strong while still developing the body awareness and engagement that can support more advanced training later.
Starting With Engagement Through Luring
We began the session with some basic luring.
At this stage, luring gives us a simple way to keep Peaches engaged while showing her exactly where we want her body to go.
Rather than asking for a finished behavior immediately, we can reward the specific positions and movements we want and gradually shape them into something more consistent.
Peaches brings a lot of energy into training, so giving that energy a clear direction is an important part of the process.
Reinforcing Heel and Front Positions
During the warm-up, we spent time rewarding Peaches for moving into both heel and front positions.
These early repetitions help create value in the positions before we start asking for more precision.
For heel, we want Peaches to understand where she belongs beside the handler.
For front, we are beginning to create a clear picture of where she should position herself directly in front of us.
Right now, the focus is on making both positions easy to understand and rewarding enough that she enjoys moving into them.
Building Better Body Awareness
We also continued using spins to help Peaches improve her body awareness.
For more technical obedience, it is useful for a dog to understand how to move the body with more control instead of simply following wherever the head goes.
Spins are a simple way to start developing that awareness while keeping the session active and fun.
That work can later support cleaner turns, heel mechanics, position changes, and other obedience exercises.
Introducing the Place Foundation
Another major part of this session was Peaches’ place training.
Because her program is primarily focused on making her a more reliable and manageable pet, place is going to be an important behavior for her.
A strong place command can help with:
Settling in the home
Impulse control
Household structure
Managing excitement
Staying in a defined area when needed
Creating clearer communication between dog and handler
For a high-energy dog like Peaches, learning how to switch from activity into a more controlled state can be just as important as learning more active obedience.
Pet Obedience Comes First
Peaches will continue working on more advanced skills throughout her program, but the priority is making sure her everyday obedience is useful.
Advanced behaviors are great, but they do not replace the need for a dog to be easy to live with.
That means building reliable communication, engagement, impulse control, and household manners first.
Once those pieces are strong, we have a much better foundation for everything else.
Peaches Is Making Great Early Progress
For only being with us a few days, Peaches is doing really well.
She is engaging with the lure, beginning to understand heel and front, developing better body awareness, and starting to build her place foundation.
More importantly, she is having fun doing it.
Peaches is a ball of energy that always seems ready for the next rep, and that makes her a really fun dog to train.
We are excited to keep building her obedience one layer at a time as she continues through her board and train program.
