Delilah Starts Learning Place in New Environments
Delilah is continuing to make progress in her board and train program, and in this session we started building more understanding around the “place” command.
We worked on place a little bit at the house the day before, but with Delilah, the environment plays a huge role in how comfortable and confident she feels.
Because of that, one of the biggest priorities is helping her understand that the same exercise can apply in different locations.
Why Environment Matters So Much for Delilah
Some dogs can learn a behavior in one place and immediately perform it somewhere else.
Delilah is not quite there yet.
For her, a change in environment can completely change how she feels about a session.
That means we need to be thoughtful about where we train, how much pressure we add, and how quickly we progress.
If she understands “place” at the house but becomes unsure somewhere new, that does not mean she forgot the behavior.
It means we need to help her generalize it.
Generalizing the Place Command
Generalization is an important part of dog training.
A dog should eventually understand that “place” means the same thing whether they are at home, at the training facility, outside, or in another new environment.
With Delilah, we are building that understanding slowly.
The goal is not just to teach her to get onto a bed or platform.
We also want her to become more comfortable performing familiar behaviors in unfamiliar places.
That makes place training useful for both obedience and confidence building.
Delilah Came Out Happy and Ready to Train
One of the best parts of this session was Delilah’s attitude at the beginning.
She came out happy, engaged, and ready to work.
Considering how hesitant she was when she first started training with us, that is a big improvement.
We are still seeing some of that confidence fade as the session goes on.
The tail does not stay wagging the entire time yet, and we can still see when she starts becoming less comfortable.
But the fact that she is coming into training with a better attitude is a really positive sign.
Knowing When to Keep Building and When to Back Off
With a sensitive dog like Delilah, it is important to pay attention to the small changes in body language throughout a session.
We do not want to push her just because she is physically capable of continuing.
We want the training to remain productive.
That means using short sessions, constructive exposure, and enough repetition to build understanding without overwhelming her.
If we can consistently finish sessions with Delilah still willing to engage, we can keep stacking successful experiences and gradually increase what she can handle.
Place Training as a Confidence Exercise
For Delilah, place is becoming more than just an obedience command.
It is another way to help her feel more secure in different environments.
A familiar behavior can give a sensitive dog something clear to focus on when the surroundings feel uncertain.
As Delilah becomes more comfortable moving onto place, staying there, and performing the behavior in different locations, we can continue building both obedience and environmental confidence at the same time.
Delilah Keeps Moving Forward
We are really happy with the direction Delilah is going.
She continues to become more engaged, more willing to train, and more comfortable with the process every day.
There is still plenty of confidence to build, but the difference between where she started and where she is now is already significant.
We will continue progressing her place command, exposing her to new environments, and helping her understand that training can stay clear and predictable no matter where she is.
