Teaching the Place Command: Building Calmness with Drax
One of the newest additions to our board and train program is Drax, and one of the first skills we're focusing on is the place command.
Like many energetic dogs, Drax has a difficult time slowing down. Sitting still and relaxing isn't something that comes naturally to him, and that's one of the primary reasons his family enrolled him in training. Their goal is simple: they want to be able to take Drax out to eat, spend time at breweries, parks, or family gatherings, and have him calmly settle instead of constantly feeling like he has to be on the move.
That's where the place command becomes such a valuable tool.
More Than Just "Go Lay Down"
Many people think the place command simply means sending a dog to a bed or platform. While that's technically true, the real value goes much deeper.
Place teaches a dog:
Patience
Impulse control
Relaxation
Clear boundaries
How to remain calm around distractions
Instead of constantly reacting to everything happening around them, dogs begin to understand that it's okay to settle and simply exist in the environment.
For many high-energy dogs, that's one of the hardest skills to learn.
Building the Behavior
When introducing place, we don't immediately expect long durations or perfect behavior. Instead, we focus on helping the dog understand exactly what we're asking.
Clear communication, consistency, and fair timing are what allow the behavior to develop naturally.
As Drax becomes more comfortable with the exercise, we'll gradually increase the difficulty by adding:
Longer durations
More distractions
Greater distance from the handler
Real-world environments
By progressing at a pace the dog can understand, we're building confidence alongside reliability.
Every Dog Learns Differently
One thing we've noticed already is that Drax is an incredibly smart dog.
He picks up new concepts quickly when expectations are clear and training remains fair and consistent. Like every dog in our board and train program, we'll continue adjusting our approach based on how he learns instead of forcing him into a one-size-fits-all system.
That individualized approach is what allows dogs to make steady progress while maintaining confidence throughout the learning process.
Looking Ahead
This is just the beginning of Drax's training journey.
Over the coming weeks we'll continue documenting his progress as we build stronger obedience, improve his ability to settle in different environments, and help him become the reliable companion his family is looking for.
