Building Reliable Obedience: Drax's Progress with Duration Training

One of the newest dogs in our board and train program is Drax, and he's been making impressive progress in a short amount of time. In this training session, we continued building the foundation of his obedience by focusing on four essential behaviors: heel, sit, down, and commands in motion.

These commands may seem basic, but they're some of the most important skills a dog can learn. Reliable obedience isn't built through flashy exercises—it's built through consistency, repetition, and a clear understanding of what each command means.

Why Duration Matters

Teaching a dog to sit or lie down is only the beginning. The real challenge is helping them understand that the command continues until they're released.

Duration teaches dogs patience, self-control, and the ability to remain engaged even when nothing exciting is happening. For many dogs, especially those with high energy levels, learning to simply stay put can be just as challenging as learning a new behavior.

By gradually increasing the amount of time Drax holds each command, we're building reliability that will transfer into everyday situations.

Heel Work with Purpose

A good heel is much more than walking next to your leg.

Heel work develops focus, communication, and teamwork between the dog and handler. Throughout Drax's session, we continued reinforcing proper position while encouraging him to stay engaged as we changed direction, speed, and transitioned into other obedience behaviors.

As dogs become more fluent, the heel becomes a conversation rather than a constant reminder.

Commands in Motion

Another focus of today's session was introducing commands while moving.

Instead of thinking about each command as an isolated behavior, we want Drax to understand that obedience is fluid. Whether he's heeling, sitting, lying down, or transitioning between positions, he should remain attentive and ready for the next cue.

Teaching commands in motion helps build smoother transitions and prepares dogs for more advanced obedience as their training progresses.

Building Confidence Through Consistency

One thing we've been especially happy with is how quickly Drax learns when expectations are clear.

He's a smart dog that responds well to fair, consistent training. Rather than overwhelming him with too much too soon, we're taking the time to build a strong foundation that will support everything else we introduce later in his program.

That foundation is what creates dependable obedience—not just in the training facility, but in everyday life with his family.

Looking Ahead

Drax has only been with us for a short time, but he's already making great strides. As his program continues, we'll keep increasing the difficulty by adding more duration, distractions, and real-world scenarios to help him become a calm, reliable companion.
