Teaching Advanced Position Changes: Carbon Learns Switch and Flip Commands

One of the most rewarding parts of dog training is introducing new concepts and watching a dog work through the process of understanding them. In Carbon's latest Board & Train session, we began teaching two new obedience markers: Switch and Flip.

These advanced position changes help improve communication, body awareness, engagement, and overall obedience while giving handlers additional tools to navigate real-world situations with their dogs.

As Carbon continues her Board & Train tune-up, these exercises will become an important part of her training progression.

What Are Switch and Flip Commands?

Position changes are a valuable component of advanced obedience training because they require dogs to think, problem-solve, and actively listen to their handlers.

In Carbon's training:

Switch asks her to move from one side of the handler to the other by traveling behind the handler.

Flip asks her to move from one side to the other by traveling around the front of the handler.

While both commands result in a similar final position, the path the dog takes is completely different.

This distinction requires the dog to pay close attention to the information being given and respond accordingly.

Why Position Changes Matter in Dog Training

Many dog owners focus on basic obedience commands such as sit, down, place, and recall. While those skills are essential, advanced obedience training often introduces additional layers of communication that improve responsiveness and engagement.

Teaching position changes helps develop:

Better Communication

Dogs learn to process specific verbal information and respond with the correct behavior rather than simply anticipating movement.

Increased Engagement

The dog must remain mentally connected to the handler throughout the exercise.

Improved Body Awareness

Dogs become more conscious of how they move their body and where they are positioned relative to the handler.

Stronger Obedience Skills

Advanced position changes often carry over into heel work, off-leash obedience, sport training, and everyday handling situations.

Rear-End Awareness Creates Better Movement

One thing that stood out during Carbon's session was her ability to navigate these new exercises despite having very little experience with the commands themselves.

A big reason for that is the work her handlers have already been doing at home.

From what I've seen, they've spent time developing Carbon's rear-end awareness, and it shows.

Rear-end awareness training teaches dogs how to control and understand the movement of their hindquarters. This is an often-overlooked skill that can dramatically improve:

  • Heel position

  • Position changes

  • Athletic movement

  • Obedience precision

  • Confidence during training

When dogs understand how to move their body efficiently, learning new skills often becomes much smoother.

Building New Behaviors Through Repetition

Like any new behavior, Switch and Flip aren't something a dog masters in a single session.

Learning advanced obedience skills requires repetition, consistency, and clear communication.

Each successful repetition helps build:

  • Understanding

  • Confidence

  • Muscle memory

  • Reliability

  • Speed and fluency

The more quality repetitions Carbon receives, the more natural these movements will become.

Rather than rushing through the process, we focus on creating clarity first and then building speed and precision as understanding develops.

Why Carbon Is Fun to Train

One of the things I enjoy most about working with Carbon is her attitude toward training.

She consistently shows up ready to engage, eager to work, and willing to put effort into learning new concepts.

Dogs like Carbon make training enjoyable because they're active participants in the learning process. They embrace challenges, stay engaged, and continue trying even when they're working through something unfamiliar.

That mindset often leads to faster progress and a stronger training relationship.

Looking Ahead

This was only the beginning of Carbon's work with Switch and Flip, but we're already seeing a solid foundation forming.

Over the coming sessions, we'll continue refining these position changes while also working toward the rest of her training goals during her Board & Train stay.

As her understanding grows, we'll begin adding more precision, speed, and reliability to the exercises while continuing to build upon the strong foundation her handlers have already established.
