Teaching Vader How to Learn: Building His Puppy Training Foundation With the Clicker
Vader’s training journey continues, and in this session we’re working on something extremely simple but incredibly important: loading the clicker.
If you’ve been following Vader’s story, you know he’s the young puppy we recently pulled from the shelter after he was placed on the euthanasia list. Now that he’s safe and training with us at Primal Canine, our priority is giving him a clear foundation that we can continue building on.
At roughly four months old, Vader is essentially learning how to learn.
And one of the first things we want to establish is a clear way to tell him exactly when he does something we like.
What Is a Clicker in Dog Training?
A clicker is what we call a mechanical marker.
The concept is pretty simple:
If Vader does something we like, we click to mark that moment and then reward him.
Before we can use the clicker to teach behaviors, however, Vader first needs to understand what the sound means.
That’s where loading the clicker comes in.
We repeatedly pair the sound of the click with something Vader values, such as food. Through repetition, he begins making the association:
Click = I did something right and a reward is coming.
Once that association becomes strong, the clicker gives us a precise way to communicate with him during training.
Why Use a Marker in Dog Training?
Timing matters when training a dog, especially a young puppy.
Imagine Vader gives us exactly the behavior we want, but it takes us a couple of seconds to get a treat into his mouth.
A lot can happen during those couple of seconds.
The clicker allows us to identify the exact moment we liked rather than relying solely on the timing of the physical reward.
We can essentially tell Vader:
“THAT. That exact thing you just did is what earned the reward.”
That creates clarity.
And at this stage in Vader’s development, clarity is of the utmost importance.
Clear Communication Builds Better Training
Vader is young. He recently came out of the shelter, he’s adapting to an entirely new environment, and we’re just beginning to learn more about his personality.
Our job isn't to make his training complicated.
Our job is to make communication as easy for him to understand as possible.
If Vader clearly understands which behaviors earn rewards, he can start actively participating in the learning process rather than simply guessing what we want.
As his understanding of the marker improves, we can begin using it while teaching and shaping new behaviors.
That might eventually include engagement, positions, obedience, movement, recalls, place work, and plenty of other skills.
But before worrying about all of that, we need the foundation.
Teaching a Puppy How to Learn
One of the most important parts of puppy training isn't immediately teaching a long list of commands.
It's teaching the puppy how the training system works.
Vader needs to learn how to engage with us, how to problem solve, how rewards work, and how our communication applies to his behavior.
That's why these early sessions can look incredibly simple from the outside.
We're not asking Vader to perform complicated obedience.
We're creating a language that we'll be able to use when we eventually do.
For now:
Behavior we like → Click → Reward.
Simple, clear, and repeatable.
Vader Continues to Show Us He Wants to Work
One of the exciting things we've noticed since bringing Vader back from the shelter is how much he enjoys working.
He's showing us great food drive, he loves to play, and he brings plenty of personality into his sessions.
Yes, he's still our spicy little dude with a bit of a dark side — hence the name Vader 😂 — but underneath all of that puppy energy is a young dog who appears very willing to learn.
Now it's our job to give that energy some direction.
Every session gives us another opportunity to learn more about him while building the skills he'll need moving forward.
Vader Is Available for Adoption
While Vader continues training with us, we're also searching for the right forever home for him.
He's still a very young puppy, so finding the right family now gives him the opportunity to continue developing with structure, communication, and appropriate outlets for his energy.
If you're interested in adopting Vader, contact Primal Canine for more information.
Not ready to adopt?
You can still help.
Share Vader's story and training videos. Every share puts him in front of another potential adopter and increases our chances of finding the right home for this little dude.
Follow along as we continue documenting his progress from rescue puppy to trained companion.
