Cleaning Up Peaches’ Down From Heel: Building Precision and Duration

In this session with Peaches, we’re continuing to clean up one of the smaller details in her obedience: the down from heel.

The behavior itself is already there. Now we’re working on making it cleaner, straighter, and more consistent.

Our focus is getting Peaches to down directly from the heel position without drifting out, rotating her body, or losing alignment. At the same time, we’re also building more duration so she learns that the command does not end until she is released.

Why Position Matters in Obedience Training

There is a big difference between a dog simply knowing a command and being able to perform that command cleanly and consistently.

With Peaches, we want the down from heel to be precise.

That means she should be able to move from a proper heel position into a straight down while maintaining the same alignment next to the handler.

These small details become especially important as obedience becomes more advanced.

Cleaner positions can make transitions smoother, improve communication, and create a more polished overall picture.

Building Duration From the Heel Position

The second part of this session is duration.

Peaches understands the down, but holding it from the heel position is still something we are developing.

We want her to understand that once she is given the command, she should remain in position until she hears her release marker.

That sounds simple, but duration often takes just as much repetition as teaching the behavior itself.

A dog may understand how to get into position while still needing help understanding how long to stay there.

Why “Place” Is Easier for Peaches

Funny enough, Peaches has much less trouble with duration when she is working on the place command.

Put her on place and holding position is almost a piece of cake.

Ask her to hold the same concept from the heel position, and suddenly it becomes a little more challenging.

This is a great example of how dogs do not always automatically generalize behaviors from one context to another.

Just because a dog understands duration on a place cot does not necessarily mean that same understanding will immediately transfer to a down beside the handler.

That is why we practice behaviors in different positions, environments, and situations.

Using Repetition to Create Cleaner Obedience

At this stage of Peaches’ training, a lot of the work comes down to repetition and consistency.

We are reinforcing the exact picture we want:

  • A straight down from heel

  • Better body alignment

  • Staying in position

  • Waiting for the release

  • Maintaining engagement with the handler

  • Performing the behavior consistently

The more successful repetitions we can build, the more natural the behavior becomes.

Peaches’ Board and Train Progress

Peaches has been a fun dog to work with throughout her board and train program.

She has a ton of personality and energy, which makes training sessions entertaining while also giving us plenty to work with.

We have been building her engagement, obedience, heel work, positions, off-leash control, and foundational bite work while continuing to polish the smaller details along the way.

Sessions like this may not look as flashy as advanced off-leash work or bite training, but they are an important part of building reliable obedience.

The little details add up.
