Building Stronger Grips with a Leather Bite Pillow: Osi's Protection Dog Training Progress
Not every piece of bite equipment feels the same to a dog, and that's exactly why we rotate different training tools throughout the development process. By changing the picture, we can encourage new behaviors, solve problems, and continue building stronger, more complete protection dogs.
In Osi's first training session of the day, we introduced a leather bite pillow while continuing to work with the clatter stick. Leather presents a different challenge than traditional fabric bite pillows because it's naturally more difficult for the dog to grip. As a result, Osi had to bite harder and stay more committed to maintain possession of the pillow.
The purpose behind using leather wasn't simply to make the exercise more difficult. We wanted to create productive frustration. Because the reward isn't immediately as satisfying as biting fabric, Osi has to work harder to achieve success. Over time, this can help develop stronger grips, greater commitment to the bite, and increased intensity while still keeping the training enjoyable.
Alongside the leather pillow, we continued exposing Osi to the clatter stick. Introducing controlled environmental pressure teaches her to stay engaged with the bite instead of becoming distracted by unfamiliar sounds or movement. Building confidence under pressure is an important part of creating a reliable protection dog.
Considering the new equipment and additional environmental pressure, Osi handled the session well. She stayed engaged, continued working through the challenges, and gave us plenty of positives to build on moving forward.
Every dog develops at a different pace, which is why we tailor our training to the individual in front of us. By making small adjustments like changing equipment or introducing new environmental challenges, we can continue bringing out each dog's full potential while keeping training productive and enjoyable.
We're excited to continue Osi's development and look forward to seeing how she progresses with additional repetitions in the sessions ahead.
