Onyx's Board & Train Journey Begins: Evaluating Dog & People Reactivity
One of the things we've been doing more at Primal Canine is documenting the training journeys of our own dogs through our Training Sessions series. Recently, I decided it would be valuable to start bringing some of our Board & Train dogs into that process as well.
Not only does it allow owners to see what goes into a professional training program, but it also gives people an honest look at what behavior modification and obedience training actually look like from day one.
The first dog we're following is Onyx.
Meet Onyx
Onyx recently arrived at Primal Canine for our Board & Train program to address several goals:
• Dog reactivity
• People reactivity
• Basic obedience
• Potential off-leash reliability
Like many behavior modification cases, our first priority isn't teaching commands. It's understanding the dog in front of us.
Before we can create a training plan, we need to evaluate behavior, identify triggers, and determine how the dog responds to stress, pressure, and new environments.
Drop-Off Didn't Go Quite As Planned
Onyx's arrival wasn't exactly smooth.
As he was exiting his handler's vehicle, he became reactive toward myself and one of our trainers. During the commotion, he managed to get his paw caught in a leash buckle.
Fortunately, we were able to quickly get him free without injury, but moments like this serve as a reminder of how elevated some dogs can be when entering a new environment.
Everything is unfamiliar.
New people.
New smells.
New dogs.
New routines.
For a reactive dog, that's a lot to process.
The Importance of Decompression
After getting Onyx settled, the rest of the day was intentionally simple.
Instead of immediately jumping into obedience training or corrections, the goal was to help him decompress and lower his stress levels.
His first day consisted primarily of:
• Structured walks
• Crate time
• Environmental exposure
• Relaxation and decompression
Many owners are surprised to learn that some of the most important work in a Board & Train program happens before formal training even begins.
A dog that is stressed, overwhelmed, or unable to regulate itself isn't in the best state to learn.
That's why we focus heavily on creating stability before adding pressure.
Evaluating Reactivity in Real-World Situations
Onyx's second day gave us our first opportunity to observe some of his behavior around other dogs.
We brought him to our afternoon group class in Gilroy where we could safely evaluate his reactions and gather information about his triggers, thresholds, and overall mindset.
These early observations are important because they help shape the training plan moving forward.
Every reactive dog is different.
Some dogs react out of fear.
Some react out of frustration.
Others simply lack the skills to process their environment appropriately.
Understanding the "why" behind the behavior helps us build a more effective path forward.
Looking Ahead
After group class, we returned to the facility, took another walk, and filmed this session to document where Onyx currently stands at the beginning of his training journey.
Right now, we're still in the information-gathering phase.
We're learning about Onyx.
He's learning about us.
And together we'll begin building the communication, structure, and confidence necessary to create lasting change.
What I can already tell is that Onyx is going to be a fun project.
He's got plenty of personality, and I'm looking forward to helping both him and his family navigate the challenges ahead.
As always, behavior modification is a process, not an event. There won't be overnight miracles, but there will be consistent work, clear communication, and honest documentation of the journey.
I'm excited to share it with all of you.
