Gemmy's Board & Train Journey Begins: Building Engagement, Recall, and Puppy Foundations
Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Between potty training accidents, chewing, lack of focus, and the challenge of teaching reliable obedience, many owners quickly realize that raising a well-behaved dog requires a solid foundation and consistent training.
That's exactly why Gemmy, a 5½-month-old Dachshund puppy, joined us for a two-week Board & Train program at Primal Canine.
During her stay, we'll be focusing on two of the most important areas of puppy development: potty training and basic obedience. Before we can move into more advanced skills, we need to establish a strong relationship, clear communication, and a positive learning experience. Every successful dog training program starts with these fundamentals.
Why We Start Slow with Every Board & Train Dog
One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make is rushing the training process.
When a dog enters our Board & Train program, especially a young puppy, we don't immediately begin drilling commands or expecting perfection. Instead, we spend time building trust, engagement, and motivation.
Training should be enjoyable for the dog. When dogs love the learning process, they become more engaged, more confident, and more willing to work with their handler.
For Gemmy, our first training sessions are focused on creating positive interactions and teaching her that paying attention to her trainer leads to rewards and success.
This approach helps us build reliable behaviors that will continue long after the program is complete.
Teaching Name Recognition and Engagement
One of the first concepts we're introducing is name recognition.
Many dog owners repeat their dog's name constantly without creating any real meaning behind it. Over time, the dog learns that their name is simply background noise.
We want the opposite.
When Gemmy hears her name, we want her immediate response to be:
"Pay attention to my handler."
Every time she hears her name and chooses to engage with us, she's rewarded. This creates a strong association between hearing her name and checking in with the person handling her.
Engagement training becomes the foundation for virtually every obedience behavior we teach moving forward.
Building the Foundation for Reliable Recall
Recall training is one of the most important skills any dog can learn.
A reliable recall can improve safety, increase freedom, and strengthen communication between dog and owner. However, reliable recalls don't start with calling a dog from long distances.
They begin with engagement.
Before Gemmy can learn to come when called in distracting environments, she must first learn that being near her handler is valuable and rewarding.
By rewarding her for choosing to engage and move toward us, we're laying the groundwork for future recall training. These early repetitions may seem simple, but they create habits that become incredibly valuable as training progresses.
Potty Training and Basic Obedience for Puppies
In addition to engagement and recall foundations, Gemmy's Board & Train program will focus heavily on potty training and basic obedience.
Young puppies thrive when structure and consistency are introduced early. During her stay, we'll be helping her develop better habits while introducing foundational obedience skills that will make life easier for both her and her family.
Some of the areas we'll be working on include:
Potty training consistency
Name recognition
Recall foundations
Marker training
Engagement with the handler
Sit
Down
Leash manners
Basic household behaviors
Confidence building
Each skill builds upon the previous one, creating a clear pathway toward a well-mannered and confident companion.
The Importance of Relationship-Based Training
At Primal Canine, we believe successful dog training starts with the relationship between dog and handler.
Commands matter. Obedience matters. Reliability matters.
But none of those things develop without trust, clarity, and engagement.
By taking the time to build that relationship first, we create dogs that enjoy training and understand how to communicate with their handlers. This leads to stronger obedience, better behavior, and long-term success.
Gemmy is just getting started, but she's already showing great potential. We're excited to continue documenting her progress throughout her Board & Train journey and look forward to sharing the next stages of her training.
