Building Clarity Under Drive With Felix | Marker Training, Call Offs & Reward Structure
At Primal Canine, one of the biggest things we focus on in dog training is clarity.
Not just obedience.
Not just control.
But true communication between handler and dog.
In this Training Sessions video, we continue working with Felix on building cleaner communication under drive by refining his marker system and reward structure during obedience and tug work.
Felix is a powerful, high-drive working dog with years of experience operating in intense environments. Because of that, clarity matters even more. When drive increases, communication has to become even cleaner so the dog understands exactly what behavior is being rewarded and when.
Building Clear Marker Communication
In this session, we focus heavily on two different reward markers:
“Get It” = Indirect Reward
“Get it” tells Felix the reward exists away from the handler.
The reward might be placed on the ground, thrown away from us, or positioned elsewhere in the environment. This helps create independence, understanding, and cleaner transitions between behaviors without the dog becoming overly dependent on the handler physically delivering the reward.
Indirect rewards are a huge part of building:
Better impulse control
Cleaner obedience transitions
Environmental confidence
More thoughtful behavior under drive
“Take It” = Direct Reward
“Take it” means the reward comes directly from the handler.
This creates a completely different picture for the dog. Instead of searching for the reward elsewhere, Felix learns that engagement with the handler is what unlocks access to the reward.
In this session, “take it” becomes extremely important because we use it after a high-drive recall off his favorite tug.
Applying The Marker System In Real Training
Once the markers are clear, we start applying them in a more difficult training picture.
Felix is sent toward his favorite reward:
The BIG ASS TUG from Power Grip K9.
Right as he commits to the tug, he’s recalled mid-drive back to his place command.
For a dog with Felix’s level of intensity, this is where communication can easily become muddy if the handler lacks clarity or timing.
Instead of creating conflict or suppressing drive, the goal is to teach the dog:
How to disengage cleanly
How to re-engage correctly
How to understand exactly when the reward is earned
Once Felix completes the recall and returns to position correctly, he earns the reward through “take it.”
That distinction matters.
The reward timing helps create:
Cleaner obedience under distraction
Better impulse control
Stronger understanding of reward mechanics
More clarity under high arousal
Control Without Losing Intensity
A common mistake in dog training is sacrificing intensity in order to gain control.
At Primal Canine, we believe the goal is both.
We want dogs that can:
Think clearly under pressure
Stay engaged while remaining responsive
Transition cleanly between obedience and reward
Maintain drive without becoming chaotic
That balance is what creates reliable obedience in real-world environments, sport training, and advanced working dog development.
Felix has been making serious progress in his training program, and sessions like this show how important proper communication and reward structure really are.
Why Marker Training Matters
Whether you have:
A high-drive working dog
A reactive dog
A young puppy
A sport dog
Or a family pet
Your marker system can completely change the clarity of your training.
When your dog understands:
What behavior is correct
When the reward is earned
Where the reward comes from
And how to access it
Training becomes significantly cleaner and less frustrating for both the dog and handler.
