What Happens After Board and Train? Delilah’s Next Phase Is Building Confidence
In today’s session with Delilah, we’re reviewing some of what she has learned throughout her board and train program and talking about what comes next as she prepares to go home.
For Delilah, the transition home is about much more than simply maintaining commands.
Yes, her family will continue reinforcing the obedience she has learned, but the bigger goal is continuing to improve her confidence, emotional stability, and ability to move through the world without becoming overwhelmed.
That is where the next phase of her training really begins.
Board and Train Is Not the Finish Line
A board and train program can create structure, improve communication, and give a dog a stronger behavioral foundation, but the work does not stop when the dog goes home.
That is especially true for a nervous dog like Delilah.
Throughout her stay, we have spent a lot of time helping her become more comfortable with things she previously found difficult.
Now that she has better communication and a stronger obedience foundation, her family can use those tools to continue expanding her world.
Maintaining Obedience Still Matters
Delilah has learned and improved a number of behaviors throughout her stay, including:
Heel
Place
Recall
Down
Loose-leash walking
Staying in position
Better handler engagement
Working through environmental distractions
Those behaviors still need to be maintained after she goes home.
But with Delilah, obedience is not only about having a dog that follows commands.
It also gives her structure.
When something in the environment makes her nervous, a familiar behavior can give her something clear to focus on instead of allowing the fear to completely take over.
Using Obedience to Support Confidence
One of the biggest goals moving forward is helping Delilah experience more of everyday life.
That means going to different places, seeing unfamiliar things, hearing new noises, walking on different surfaces, and learning that she can successfully work through those situations.
The obedience gives her family a framework for doing that.
Instead of simply exposing her to something scary and hoping she gets used to it, they can give her familiar tasks and clear expectations while she experiences the environment.
Over time, those successful experiences can help build more confidence.
Exposure Is the Next Big Piece
Delilah has made significant progress, but confidence is something that has to continue being developed.
The next phase should include consistent exposure to things like:
New walking routes
Different neighborhoods
Busier environments
New people
Different surfaces
Vehicle noise
Outdoor patios
Parks
Stores that allow dogs
Everyday sights and sounds
The point is not to overwhelm her.
The goal is to steadily expand what she can handle while giving her enough structure and communication to work through each experience.
Progress With a Nervous Dog Takes Repetition
One thing Delilah has taught us throughout her program is just how important repetition can be.
Some dogs may become comfortable with something after only a few experiences.
With Delilah, it can take considerably more.
And even after she becomes comfortable in one environment, that confidence may not automatically carry over somewhere new.
That is why consistency after board and train is so important.
The more successful experiences she can accumulate, the more opportunities she has to build confidence.
Recovery Matters Too
It is unrealistic to expect Delilah to suddenly stop getting nervous altogether.
She may still get startled.
She may still hesitate in new environments.
She may still have moments where something feels overwhelming.
The important part is how well she can recover.
Can she return her attention to her handler?
Can she move forward instead of shutting down?
Can she perform something familiar and continue with the outing?
Those moments of recovery are an important part of her continued progress.
Giving the Family the Right Tools
The purpose of Delilah’s board and train program was not just to teach her commands while she was with us.
It was also to give her family a better set of tools for communicating with her after she returned home.
Now they can use the obedience, structure, and communication she has learned to help guide her through situations that were previously much more difficult.
That transfer back to the family is a major part of making a board and train successful long term.
Delilah Has Come a Long Way
When Delilah first arrived, her nerves affected nearly everything.
New environments could cause her to shut down, she struggled with engagement, and even relatively small changes in the environment could become difficult for her.
Throughout her stay, we have seen improvements in her:
Confidence
Engagement
Loose-leash walking
Obedience
Place training
Recovery from distractions
Willingness to take food
Ability to work in different environments
Communication with the handler
There is still work ahead, but she now has a much stronger foundation.
