Battle Pigs Episode 6: Ivy Takes the Lead While Oso & Mecha Put in Work
One of the best parts about raising and training dogs is that not every session has to be about pushing harder, training longer, or accomplishing something major.
Sometimes the best days are the simple ones.
In Battle Pigs Episode 6, Ivy and I headed down to the facility to escape the heat and spend some time working with the pigs. The goal wasn't to have a huge training day or make massive breakthroughs. It was simply to get some quality reps in, continue building engagement, and most importantly, have fun.
Ivy & Oso Continue Building Their Partnership
One of the highlights of the day was watching Ivy work with Oso.
As Oso continues to mature, he's becoming an incredible dog for helping younger handlers learn how to communicate, reward, and engage with their dogs. During this session, Ivy got some obedience reps in along with plenty of play sessions to keep Oso motivated and engaged.
My role was mostly to spot, coach, and help guide the session while Ivy handled the majority of the work.
Watching her confidence continue to grow around training has been one of the coolest parts of documenting the Battle Pigs journey.
Every rep is another opportunity to improve timing, communication, and understanding between dog and handler.
Mecha Continues To Grow
After Oso's turn, it was time for Mecha to get some work in.
The focus for Mecha remains the same:
Build engagement.
Build understanding.
Build confidence.
Rather than chasing perfection, we're focused on creating consistency through repetition and clear communication.
During this session, Mecha worked through obedience exercises designed to clean up some of the smaller details in his training while maintaining enthusiasm and engagement throughout the process.
We also mixed in a few bite work reps to continue building his foundation and confidence.
One thing I've enjoyed about Mecha's development is that he continues to remind people that every dog progresses differently.
Some dogs move fast.
Some dogs need smaller steps.
The key is understanding the dog in front of you and building the program around what helps them succeed.
The Importance of Engagement
If there was one theme throughout this entire episode, it was engagement.
Before obedience can be precise and before behaviors become reliable, dogs need to be mentally connected to the handler.
That's why so much of our training revolves around:
• Attention
• Communication
• Clarity
• Motivation
• Play
When dogs are engaged, learning becomes easier.
When dogs understand how to communicate with their handlers, everything else begins to fall into place.
The obedience work we did during this episode wasn't about adding new commands. It was about refining what already exists and making sure the dogs remain active participants in the training process instead of simply going through the motions.
Having Fun Matters
One mistake many people make in dog training is believing every session has to be serious.
The reality is that some of the best training happens when both the dog and handler are enjoying themselves.
Training should build relationships.
It should create confidence.
It should strengthen communication.
And sometimes it should simply be fun.
That's exactly what this day was about.
A few good reps.
A few lessons learned.
A lot of play.
And another step forward for the pigs.
