Bandit Builds Clearer E-Collar Communication and a Stronger Focused Heel Off Leash
Bandit continues making strong progress in his board and train program, and in this latest session we focused on clearer e-collar communication, more precise obedience, and further developing his “foos” focused heel.
Everything was done off leash so we could keep building on the reliability and communication we have already established.
Mixing Commands Without Losing Precision
One of the main goals of this session was to move between different commands while keeping Bandit clear and accurate.
We worked through exercises like his place command and his “foos” focused heel, asking him to transition between behaviors while still paying attention to the details.
At this stage, it is not enough for Bandit to simply complete the command.
We want him to respond clearly, stay engaged, and execute each behavior with more consistency and precision.
Using the E-Collar as a Communication Tool
We also continued using the e-collar as part of Bandit’s communication system.
Over the past several sessions, we have been building a positive association with the collar so it can function as more than just a correction tool.
In this session, it helped guide Bandit through the work, support his attention, and reinforce the communication around commands he already understands.
The goal is for the stimulation to have a clear meaning and give Bandit another way to understand what the handler is asking.
Developing a Stronger “Foos” Focused Heel
A major part of the session was continuing to develop Bandit’s “foos.”
For Bandit, “foos” is his more technical focused heel.
We are working on sharpening things like:
Head position
Eye contact and engagement
Body placement
Consistency beside the handler
Precision while moving
Clear transitions into and out of the position
The more consistent these details become, the stronger the finished behavior will be.
Why Focused Heel Requires More Than Position
A focused heel is not just about having the dog physically beside the handler.
We also want Bandit mentally connected to the work.
That means maintaining attention, understanding the position, and staying responsive even when there is no leash physically guiding him.
This is where the earlier work on engagement and e-collar communication starts to pay off.
Building Off-Leash Reliability Through Repetition
Everything in this session was done off leash because we want to keep developing true reliability.
Off-leash obedience is not just about removing the leash and hoping the dog listens.
It is built through repetition, clear communication, reinforcement, and gradually increasing the level of responsibility the dog can handle.
Bandit is already showing strong progress, and these sessions allow us to identify the smaller details that still need work.
Cleaning Up the Details
Bandit is at a stage where much of the foundation is already there.
Now we can spend more time cleaning up the mechanics.
That means improving precision, making transitions smoother, strengthening communication, and making sure the same level of obedience holds up without leash guidance.
This is where good obedience starts becoming really polished.
Bandit Continues to Progress
Bandit did a great job in this session.
His off-leash reliability continues to improve, his e-collar communication is becoming clearer, and his focused heel is getting stronger with each rep.
We still have details to sharpen, but he is moving in the right direction.
We will continue building his “foos,” mixing commands, and increasing his ability to work precisely off leash as his understanding develops.
